🌑 Solar Eclipse — April 8, 2024
The total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024 swept across North America from Mexico through Texas, the Great Lakes, and into New England. These photos were taken from Stowe, Vermont, which sat within the path of totality. They capture the progression through totality — from the last sliver of sunlight, through the diamond ring effect and Baily's beads, to the full corona with visible solar prominences.
About These Photos
These six images document the key moments of totality. The first shot shows the final thin crescent of the sun just before the Moon's shadow fell completely. The diamond ring effect appears as the last point of sunlight blazes through a valley on the lunar limb. During totality, the solar corona — the Sun's outer atmosphere normally invisible due to its brightness — becomes fully visible, and red solar prominences erupt from the Sun's surface at the edge of the Moon's disc.
🎥 GoPro Video — The Full Experience
This video was recorded on a GoPro mounted on a helmet, capturing the moments before, during, and after totality exactly as experienced on the ground in Stowe. It gives a great sense of the dramatic darkening of the sky, the crowd reaction, and the breathtaking few minutes of totality.
